recite: sweet talk

sweet talk

You are not the Mona Lisa
with that relentless look.
Or Venus borne over the froth
of waves on a pink half shell.
Or an odalisque by Delacroix,
veils lapping at your nakedness.
You are more like the sunlight
of Edward Hopper,
especially when it slants
against the eastern side
of a white clapboard house
in the early hours of the morning,
with no figure standing
at a window in a violet bathrobe,
just the sunlight,
the columns of the front porch
and the long shadows
they throw down
upon the dark green lawn, baby.

capture: julia schauenburg

i love this idea and the beauty australian-based photographer julia schauenburg captures in the last breath of the flowers she buys for herself.

“I have spent one year buying myself flowers every week. I am giving myself flowers, in appreciation of myself. I watch them die, I take their photograph, like a mug shot, a document of their existence an honor to mine. I document the moment of loss, the moment when romance turns into nostalgia. The gesture of giving flowers is the desire to manifest, in real time, an emotion, which is timeless in its nature. The tragedy lies within its inherent truth, its eventual death. By photographing a part of its process, the part before the romantic moment gets destroyed, is the moment I am capturing, documenting and keeping. As Hippocrates said, ‘Life is short, Art is long.’

peruse: an object of beauty

"[art is] what lies between our dreams and reality."

one of my resolutions for 2011 was to read more, so with that my first book of the year was steve martin's an object of beauty. as this review suggests, the novel really did kindle the collector's instinct in me.

savor: fried avocado

i must try this!

Canola oil for frying
1/4 cup flour
1 tsp kosher salt
2 large eggs, beaten to blend
1 1/4 cups panko (Japanese bread crumbs)
2 firm-ripe medium avocados, pitted, peeled, and sliced into 1/2-inch wedges
Grated parmesan for serving (optional)

Preheat oven to 200°. In a medium saucepan, heat 1 1/2 in. oil until it registers 375° on a deep-fry thermometer.

Meanwhile, mix flour with 1/2 tsp. salt in a shallow plate. Put eggs and panko in separate shallow plates.

Sprinkle the avocado slices with the remaining ½ tsp salt.  Dip each slice in flour, shaking off excess. Dip in egg, then panko to coat. Set on 2 plates in a single layer.

Fry a quarter of avocado slices at a time until deep golden, 30 to 60 seconds. Transfer slices to a plate lined with paper towels. Keep warm in oven while cooking remaining avocados. Sprinkle with salt and a little grated parmesan.

adore: elizabeth olsen

i heart ashley and mary-kate, but this is the first i've really heard much of their sister, elizabeth [beyond her being half the namesake of their fab line, elizabeth and james]. i love that she didn't use her famous sisters to catapult herself onto the scene but rather took her time, is studying acting on her own, went to moscow's art theatre school for a bit, and did this:

"The [stage combat] teacher and I got along even though he didn't speak English. He was trying to demonstrate something and asked for a guy. I kind of scoffed and raised my hand, because he didn't ask any of the chicks to volunteer. And we did this exercise where you have to block someone from slapping your head. It was funny, though because he wasn't letting me down easy; I actually had to work to avoid getting hit."

i'm looking forward to seeing the upcoming peace, love, & understanding [and now not just for chace crawford]
